Case Study Empowering Retail Sales with Digital Tools

How we developed a tablet-optimized SIM registration app with barcode ID scanning to streamline retail customer onboarding.

The Client

Modernizing point-of-sale customer acquisition for a regional telecom leader.

The client is a major telecommunications provider operating in the Middle East. They offer a comprehensive suite of consumer and business services, including high-speed mobile networks, fiber-to-the-home broadband, and corporate managed IT solutions. With a large network of retail stores and partner outlets, they register thousands of new mobile subscribers daily, making the in-store onboarding process a critical part of their customer acquisition strategy.

In the Middle Eastern telecommunications market, regulatory compliance for mobile sales is highly strict. The regional government requires service providers to verify the identity of every buyer by capturing their National ID details, securing a physical or digital signature, and registering the SIM card against their identity records. These regulations are designed to prevent identity theft and fraud, making thorough data capture a non-negotiable step in the sales process.

To manage this volume while maintaining regulatory compliance, the client needed a digital onboarding solution for their retail partners. They required a tablet-optimized application that store representatives could use to register new customers, verify identities, and complete SIM card sales on the spot.

The Challenge

The retail bottleneck of manual SIM registration.

Before the digital transformation, the client's retail registration process was slow and paper-based. When a customer wanted to purchase a SIM card, the retail agent had to manually transcribe their National ID details (such as name, ID number, and date of birth) into a desktop software application. The customer then had to sign a physical contract, which was scanned and uploaded to a central office for manual audit and storage.

This manual process caused long wait times in retail outlets, especially during peak shopping hours. Transcription errors were common, resulting in rejected applications and delayed SIM activations. Additionally, the process was difficult for tourists and expatriates, who did not hold local National IDs and required a separate verification workflow, adding complexity for retail store agents.

Manual transcription of National ID details caused long wait times and errors.

Physical contracts required scanning and manual filing, delaying SIM activation.

Separate registration workflows for residents and expatriates confused store agents.

Outdated POS terminals lacked mobile features and camera integration.

What our audit found

Identifying data quality gaps and interface friction.

We analyzed the client's retail workflow, observed store transactions, and reviewed the database schema of the legacy onboarding system. The diagnostic revealed that manual entry errors accounted for over 15% of delayed SIM activations. Agents frequently made typos when entering complex regional names and ID numbers, causing mismatch failures when verified against government registries.

Furthermore, the physical signature collection process was a major point of friction. The signature capture hardware was separate from the desktop systems, frequently disconnected, and required agent troubleshooting. Expatriate registrations were often delayed because the system did not provide clear guidelines on required documentation, leading to incomplete data capture.

1

Entry errors caused a high volume of mismatch failures against government databases.

2

Fragile connection to external signature capture hardware slowed down checkouts.

3

Lack of guidelines for non-resident passports led to incomplete registrations.

4

Desktop-only applications prevented agents from assisting customers on the sales floor.

The Solution

How we turned it around.

Automated Identity Capture

Barcode Scanning and ID Auto-Population

We built a barcode scanning module directly into the retail application. Using the tablet's camera, store representatives can scan the PDF417 barcode on the back of a customer's National ID card. The application automatically decodes the barcode, extracts the customer's personal details (including full name, ID number, nationality, and birthdate), and auto-populates the registration form in less than a second, eliminating manual typing.

What we shipped

  • Integrated a high-speed barcode decoder to scan National IDs via the tablet camera.
  • Programmed auto-population scripts to fill out registration forms instantly.
  • Established secure client-side decryption of encoded barcode data.
  • Reduced data entry times from several minutes to under a second.
Digital Contract Signing

Tablet-Optimized Forms and In-App Signatures

We developed a mobile onboarding application using Objective-C for Apple iPad deployments, connected to an ASP.NET backend. We designed tablet-optimized forms with large, accessible touch targets and integrated a digital signature module. Customers can review their subscription details and sign the digital contract directly on the tablet screen, removing the need for physical paper contracts.

What we shipped

  • Designed a mobile-first iOS retail client using Objective-C.
  • Built an ASP.NET retail portal to manage store registrations and audit logs.
  • Integrated a touch-sensitive signature capture API directly on the tablet screen.
  • Converted signed digital contracts into secure PDF files for cloud storage.
Inclusive Registration

Simplified Manual Entry for Expatriates and Non-Residents

To accommodate non-residents, we designed a simplified manual registration path within the same application. When a store representative selects a non-resident option (such as a passport or tourist visa), the application dynamically displays the specific fields required for international documents. The system guides the agent to capture a photo of the passport and enter the visa details, ensuring regulatory compliance for all customer groups.

What we shipped

  • Programmed dynamic forms that adjust fields based on the selected identity type.
  • Integrated photo capture to save passport and visa documents directly in the database.
  • Implemented data validation checks to prevent submission of incomplete forms.
  • Standardized the onboarding experience for both local residents and international visitors.

The Numbers

Outcomes we can talk about.

The rollout of the digital SIM registration application transformed the client's retail sales efficiency. By integrating barcode scanning, the company eliminated the manual data entry bottleneck, allowing store representatives to populate customer details instantly. This automated capture eliminated name and ID typos, reducing application rejections and ensuring immediate SIM card activation for customers.

The tablet-based signature capture and automated contract archiving removed paper workflows from retail locations. Store agents now handle registrations on the sales floor, improving store customer flow and reducing queue times. The unified onboarding application provides a single workflow for all customer groups, ensuring compliance with telecommunications standards across Middle Eastern markets.

Note on Metrics: Due to the client's strict regulatory compliance policies and competitive market guidelines, quantitative transaction and subscriber growth metrics were restricted from public release. The success of the project was measured qualitatively by the successful deployment of tablets to retail outlets, the complete elimination of physical paperwork, and the reduction of customer onboarding times.

What's Next

Introducing biometric verification and self-service kiosks.

Following the success of the tablet-based application, the client is planning to integrate biometric face-matching technology. This will compare the customer's live face with their scanned ID photo in real time, enhancing fraud prevention and meeting advanced security requirements.

Additionally, the client plans to deploy self-service SIM registration kiosks in airports and shopping centers, using the same scanning and signature technology to allow travelers to purchase and activate SIM cards independently.
