In the modern higher education sector, a university's web presence is their primary academic portal and recruitment channel. Students rely on the web platform to access virtual learning environments, review course syllabi, upload assignments, and interact with faculty. Prospective students, parents, and alumni use the portal to explore academic offerings, manage admissions, and connect with the university community.
Despite their reputation for educational innovation, the client's web infrastructure was struggling to keep pace with their growth. Their central website and course management platform were built on an outdated content management system (CMS) that could not scale to support their expanding student body and growing online initiatives. The university administration realized that a complete digital overhaul was necessary to support their academic mission.

When we joined this project, the university was managing its web operations on a legacy CMS that was increasingly inflexible and hard to scale. What our audit found
Exposing the structural bottlenecks of a legacy CMS.
Our engineering team conducted a comprehensive audit of the university's CMS database structure, code assets, and server setups. The audit confirmed that the legacy CMS architecture was highly unoptimized for database querying and file retrieval. Every time a student accessed a page, the database executed multiple synchronous queries, creating server queue queues.
During periods of high concurrent traffic, such as course enrollment weeks, these database queries caused memory allocation spikes, resulting in portal crashes. Additionally, the system had no global content distribution or caching layer, meaning that distance-learning students outside of Europe experienced extreme load latencies.
We also identified that the system had multiple custom, hard-coded plugins that had been developed over years. These plugins created security vulnerabilities and prevented the CMS from being updated to newer, secure versions. The solution required migrating the entire content database to a secure, enterprise-grade cloud environment and building a decoupled frontend.
